Let's Move for Ukraine!
What would it look like for a community of running and walking enthusiasts to gather together, as public health restrictions permit, and make a difference for children in Ukraine? On Saturday, May 22, those in the Soul community are invited, alongside anyone outside of the Soul community, to run or walk to raise funds for the Children’s Shelter in Ukraine. COVID-19 has been difficult for people all over the world. Pastor Sergey and his team in Ukraine work closely with a shelter for children who are in need. However, the pandemic requires that these children isolate themselves before they can enter the common areas of the shelter with the other children. Although they have the space, the part of their building they have used for this isolating process, “the Isolator,” is in severe need of renovation.
The shelter has identified painting, furniture upgrades, and general repairs to the bathroom facilities as the main needs in this area, and have calculated the renovation costs at approximately $5,000.
Move for Ukraine is our way to encourage a unique giving experience while also encouraging physical activity after another long winter here in Winnipeg. By registering for this event, you will pay an entry fee, 100% of which will go towards the Children’s Shelter renovation in Ukraine. Whether you register to run, or just want to give to this cause, registration fees and donations are tax deductible!
There are three distances to choose from: a 5k run or walk; a 10k run; or a half-marathon distance. All three runs will be done in and around the Pulberry/Minnetonka neighbourhoods in St. Vital.
Our hope is twofold: first, it is to encourage giving to this project; and second, to encourage holistic health in our community. Pastor Andre is an avid runner and desires to see others share in his passion for the sport. If running is something that has been on your heart to try for a while, now is your chance!
Normally events like this are accompanied with soliciting donations; however, we want to go about this differently. As Covid has kept us apart for so long, we want to get many small groups together running/walking for this cause. Instead of asking for donations, ask someone to do the challenge with you! In this way, we can endeavour to restore community, alongside our other goals for this event!
On May 22, take the literal next step in challenging yourself and others in making a difference for children in Ukraine.
