A Call to Prayer from Pastor Gerry
Martin Luther wrote that: “A Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” I wonder if, in our culture, we limit God in what He wants to do in our lives because of our lack of prayer. Prayer is an act of dependence. There are moments when, whatever be the attitude of the body, the soul is on its knees. Prayer is an attitude of the heart that humbles itself before the living God and declares “I need you.”
Have you ever wondered how to pray or what to pray for? You are not alone! The disciples asked Jesus the same questions. Prayer is communication between the Father and His children, and this communication, through prayer, is necessary for relationship. Prayer is humanity’s way of understanding God plan. There is no way to find out the will or plan of another unless we talk personally with them. To know God’s plan in our lives we must talk with Him and learn to listen to His voice. To have effective prayers we need to improve our ability to communicate, both talking with and listening to God.
Matthew 7:7 gives a brief outline on the components of prayer:
Ask – it deals with petition. It’s when we ask for our requests.
Seek – it deals with devotion. It’s when we seek God’s presence.
Knock – it deals with intercession. This is when we wage war on behalf of souls for salvation.
As we prepare for Easter I am calling the Soul Sanctuary community to a week of prayer together. Starting on Sunday, February 23 and carrying through each night until Thursday, February 27 we will be meeting from 7pm-8pm in the Student Centre for worship and prayer. We desire to see God move through our community with power, and such moves of God have often been precipitated by His people faithfully pursuing Him.
