Soul Devotional - June 12, 2014
The World Cup kicks off today in Brazil. I love soccer. I fell in love with the game in high school and have played ever since. I'm really excited to join half of the world around the television to watch incredibly talented players fight for the top prize in the game. Now, when it comes to soccer, I have always admired the community that surrounds the sport. Whether it be the soccer parent who shows up with coffee for every other parent early on a Saturday morning, or whether it is the fact that two teams can fight bitterly against each other for 90 minutes and still shake hands and congratulate one another after the game, there is something about the sport that draws people together. The theme song of Liverpool FC is a tune called You'll Never Walk Alone, a tune which further emphasizes my previous statement. As a community of believers, we can learn something from soccer loving communities around the world. Continually strengthening each other, and encouraging each other as Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5: "For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
Take some time today to encourage another believer. Facebook them a short message of encouragement, text them, call them or just talk to them. Your words carry incredible power, consider James 3: "Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark." Though seemingly insignificant, our words hold tremendous potential. Use that potential for good.
